TCPMP (ex-BetaPlayer) - v0.72RC1 Categorie: Multimedia
Screen Shot
Fans of DivX encoded videos look out! This is a new program that reads your videos (that you have of course encoded previously with the excellent PocketDivXEncoder ;-)...). I'll skip its audio capabilities, but know that it reads both MP3s and Ogg Vorbis.

BetaPlayer may not be an inspiring name, and the version number 0.0x may make you fear the worst, but don't worry. The application is already very well featured, and lives in the shadow of PocketMVP the champion of all categories on this site.

In spite of all my research and my many attempts at testing the menu options, I can assure you that the room for improvement is very small; it contains practically everything that you might want. Of course, you can always hope for improvements in performance or in sound quality, but that remains as final polish.

The interface is very simple, but since I use full screen mode all the time, it doesn't really concern me. It has everything that you find in a good player: full screen, contrast and luminosity control, image rotation, fast forward, and even a number of parameters (buffer, tolerance to drops) for a Microdrive type disc manager (so as to not have the drive constantly spinning, to save batteries).

Coded by Picard, a celebrity in the world of DivX since he programmed some modified DivX codecs. Without a doubt he has created a valuable program. Note that BetaPlayer now supports MPG and MJPEG.

If you cannot download on the main, try here.

I tried PocketMVP on my IPAQ 1940 and had synchronization problems between sound/video on Divx movies - BetaPlayer 0.04 had no such problems and works very well on my handheld.

scottrb (11-10-2004) - v0.04
I've been using v0.093, so called 'unstable', on my Jornada 568. I've found it to be very usable, despite the label 'unstable'. With v0.093, BetaPlayer will now play MPG1 as well as AVI, so I've even gone so far as to uninstall PocketTV, (saving some 700Kb).
There is a range of plug-ins, including one for MJPEG, so that I can now playback recordings from my Canon digital camera. I am *so* delighted with this latest version!

PyroJames (11-10-2004) - v0.04
Excellent program! I've had [frustrating] problems trying to play .avi (DivX) files before with the other programs (such as PocketDivX) but this program had no problem whatsoever. I am 100% pleased with this program! I also use a microdrive so the microdrive disc/power manager is a great feature.

Sandos (11-22-2004) - v0.04
Great program...works ecellent with Pocket DVD....No problems at all...

johnsonde (12-11-2004) - v0.04
BetaPlayer is hands-down the BEST video player for the PPC. And if you have the Dell Axim x50v, the author has created a plugin to utilize the Intel video chip, making a great thing even better!

chino (12-17-2004) - v0.04
excellent program. I am learning French and the French PC program I use comes with mpeg files, I converted them to DivX, made them smaller with another great freeware, PocketDivXEncoder, and parfait. I can view the files while taking the metro to work.

olegvj (02-12-2005) - v0.5
A good peace. Plays a good video from scaled down AVI (with PocketDivxEncoder), no problem. But, real MPG VGA is still jerky, probably even my iPaq 4700 650 XScale cannot manage to decode it properly (but add 10% of power, and it would be OK!)
WAY BETTER than PocketTV - that is really crap!

Psykit (03-11-2005) - v0.5
I can say Betaplayer is one of the best available audio/video player for ur PPC. It replaces my Windows Media Player 10 completely and is staying on my rx3715 as my main multimedia player. Hotkey controls is superb and allows u to remap every button on ur PPC. I would suggest if Betaplayer could display a playlist style while playing audio, something like WinAMP. That would be great. Thank u ppl at Corecodec for making such a superb program!

JohnnyLim (03-12-2005) - v0.5
On my XDA II, when I open a MPEG file, the program sometimes plays OK and sometimes close automatically. If close, I have to soft reset it. Also, some wmv and mpg files, which plays properly in Media Player and other MPEG player, show error message box that you have to download Audio Codec which I don't know where to download.

ejbleendreeble (04-13-2005) - v0.5
First, let's be clear about this: I am a complete dummy when it comes to video on a PC, let alone a PPC. So this is what I did: got FairUse (free version) for the PC and ripped a movie to .avi, specifying 200 Mb file size. Copied it to my 1G SD card. Installed Betaplayer. It played the movie. Not only that, it appears to play it perfectly, and switching the Axim X30 to landscape makes it work even better. Couldn't be more pleased.

lubot (04-13-2005) - v0.5
I use BetaPlayer to play my Musepack audio files (http://musepack.net). Its the first and only Musepack player for the PocketPC and since there is no hardware support for Muspack, BetaPlayer is the only chance to hear my musik while i am not at home.
Overall its pretty stable too.

sts99990 (05-20-2005) - v0.5
I installed both PocketDivXEncoder and BetaPlayer 0.5 on my new hx400, took a .VOB file of 900Mb and used the encoder with VGA settings to have it shrinked to 140Mb. I played the new file (AVI) without problem on the PC (display/sound are great) but once uploaded in the hx4700 on a CF card I had two problems :

- sound is not playing (yes I switched the speaker)
- after about 30 sec. the sequence freeze with a message about memory settings, (not enough memory)

The PDA has only stock software beside the two mentionned program and has 18Mb free for storage and 18Mb free for programs, is that enough ?

Possum Roadkill (05-26-2005) - v0.5
Plays just about any video I throw at it without difficulty. This player works better than anything I've tried on either PPC or Palm. I have found an issue with streaming, if the connection is lost and can't be re-established, but this is the only problem I have had with the program. The only advantage you will find in any of the other programs is a skins interface, which I really don't care about since I usually watch videos in full screen mode and would rather watch in-sync videos on a black background than out of sync videos with a pretty box around them.

I do most of my encoding with Handbrake, on a Macintosh.

jahanzeb (06-25-2005) - v0.5
I just got my ipaq 4700 a 2gb flash card and decided to put some divx videos on it. pocketmvp had huge problems, and dropped lots of frames, even though it claims it's using ATI optimizations -- i dont know exactly what the problem was. dejected, i tried the stable 0.5 version of betaplayer, and it WAS AMAZING! i love the interface, i love the smooth playback, the no-nonsense full screen, the total customizability, everything! WELL DONE GUYS! i only have one suggestion -- that there be an option to disable the regular buttons while video is playing... so that the regular pocketpc functions arent called when you press the buttons. anyway GREAT work and congrats on an excellent piece of software! :)

cscotty (07-14-2005) - v0.66
I have the T-Mobile PDA Phone (pocketpc) running WM2003se. First off, I converted my saved DVD's using Pocket DVD Studio (or something like that). Then I saved the file to my 512 SD card and tried playing it with pocketmvp. For some reason, nothing worked. The sound was off, it skipped frames and all that jazz. TCPMP, however BLEW ME AWAY!! It plays perfectly with really high resolution and seamless transitions. This player is a must have for the .avi files. I cant believe it's free!!

belfast-biker (10-03-2005) - v0.66
Using an i-mate Jam + 1Gb High Speed Lexar, this thing doesn't even need to use the Pocket Divx Encoder...
I can run both the original 350Mb episode and the PDE encoded 74Mb version, and they both look the same to me...!
I now use fullscreen mode al the time - even the buttons are already setup the way I'd like 'em.
After using a few other progams, all of which were jerky and had wrong screen size, this is the one for me. If I get a job, I'm donating. Can't believe this is free.
Also the interface is nice, program is zippy, lots of options, what more does a man want?
"Well happy" customer.

krrfernandes (10-28-2005) - v0.66

boz (11-02-2005) - v0.66
Hi, I have tried other media players on my Ipaq 3950 and nearly gave up hope of ever playing videos smoothly, but using TCPMP after converting video files with the PocketDivX encoder with my pc (which is very fast with the new beta version) I can now play films, music videos, home movies etc without any problems. The clarity and smoothness is amazing even in full screen mode, it will play everything i have tried on it, and I can store up to three full length movies on a 1gb compact flash card. I give it full marks.

mmubashar (11-03-2005) - v0.66
krrfernandes, simply go to the web and click the link "Latest version - 0.66 " under the WINDOWS MOBILE VERSION. You will then be redirected to a page and u will see a pink table at that anchor (dont scroll through the page). Within the pink table, look for this link tcpmp.setup.0.66.exe and download it. Once completed, connect your iPAQ to the computer via ActiveSync and install the setup file. Everything will be done automatically. Thats all. p/s: 5 stars to this program. Its my favorite..

PammyLZ (11-05-2005) - v0.66
This is a great program...finally something to play my divx movies on PPC. Works fantastic. 10 out of 5 stars!!!

ahardal (11-12-2005) - v0.66
I cant download this program..Can anyone send to my email adress this (for windows mobile)
My adress is : ahardal@gmail.com

boz (11-13-2005) - v0.66
Hi, you need to visit http://corecodec.org/frs/?group_id=53&release_id=124#r124 and download the tcpmp.smartphone.0.66.exe (it is in the pink section) if you have a windows based smartphone. If it does not run ok try downloading the plugins underneath the pink section. You must use PocketDivXEncoder to 'shrink' your video files first, before you play them back through your smartphone first, I hope this helps you out.

baluku (01-03-2006) - v0.71
hi,has anyone tried TCPMP v0.71 on Windows Mobile 5 devices? I installed tcpmp.setup.0.71.exe into my O2 ATOM, it plays well with my Dixv encoded files, but when I tried to exit from the program (selecting File->Exit menu), it hang my ATOM and I have to do a soft-reset to restart my ATOM, not sure if i'm the only one getting this?

any help? i really like to use this app =)

clahakru (01-05-2006) - v0.71
have installed TCPMP on my MDA Pro (Windows Mobile 5) and it works great without any problems. Agree with other comments: an absolutely ingenious software!! Well Done!

machello (01-11-2006) - v0.71
Hello Clahakru, i have a question for you. I have a MDA Pro also but when I run TCPMP .71 on it, the movie is slowing down all the time! I was wondering if you had the samen Problem? And if not, do you have any suggestions what i can do to improve the speed/quality of the movie?

Blue Star (1/29) -v0.71
Pocket DVD envocer Installed fine and pixs are great on my new HP4705. Trying to get a good DVD encryptor program that works. Tried DVD Decrypter and it locks up on errors when copying encrypted DVDs. Want to run full-length movies on the 4705 like others doing. Any help appreciated.

uspino (02-01-2006) - v0.71
Same problem as baluku. In my O2 Atom, the program runs fine but hungs in closing. Soft reset is the only way out. Any suggestions?

MaxM (03-03-2006) - v0.72RC1
Best about v0.72RC1 is that the equalizer now works with OGG and WMA format (in addition to MP3 which was available since BetaPlayer). That's what I was looking for a long time for my iPAQ4700.

Tiger01 (03-26-2006) - v0.72RC1
Works great! I use it on an iPAQ hx2490 (Windows Mobile 5.0) and didn't encounter a single problem yet.

EsseQuamVideri (04-21-2006) - v0.72RC1
This software is hands above what Mobile 5 has to offer. It actually allows you to zoom ahead into a movie unlike Windows Media.

Prithvish_m (04-27-2006) - v0.72RC1

ernisj (06-24-2006) - v0.72RC1
same problem as uspino. Works nice, on exit crashes, have to soft reboot, so it useless at the moment :(
Running on HP rw6828 ( similar to Atom ) with Windows Mobile 2005.

Vermiform (08-04-2006) - v0.72RC1
Tried all the others on my Dell Axim x51. This one has yet to lock up. Works great, has the best features.

heffeque (08-12-2006) - v0.72RC1
This version runs great on my Mpx200. Now the equalizer doesn't sound like a rusty can. The audio normalization just ruined it, thank god he made it an option now. There's still no native h.264 support. Does anyone know if the ffmpeg pluggin can help with the h.264?

silversonic1 (08-14-2006) - v0.72RC1
I'm running it on an Axim X51v and love it. It even managed to play content over a network connection without problems.

heffeque (08-28-2006) - v0.72RC1
Oh, I've tried playing a wav file and it just shut down without a crash report or anything. I don't know if it was just that wav or every wav (I use wav for cellphone tones).

Thanoa (11-19-2006) - v0.72RC1
This is hands-down the most stable video player for PPC. Easy to navigate (although not perfect) and I've yet to have it crash on me or not open a specific video file. An essential download for the multimedia fiends out there!

Tommy (11-21-2006) - v0.72RC1
It eaven handles iTunes videos :o)

warlock_ajay (11-21-2006) - v0.72RC1
Wow, I can not believe this player. I use it with my new xda mini and I love it. Great features and lots of options to play around. Single tap full screen function is my favourite. But ony one concern, there is an option for equalizer but selecting this option doesn't pop up any equalizer. Please if any one knows how it works ..let know. Thnks.

ashish (12-01-2006) - v0.72RC1

laconf (12-14-2006) - v0.72RC1
I've been using it for two years and it is awesome, however it still misses subtitle(sub, srt) support. :(

bshwalker (12-16-2006) - v0.72RC1
Very basic and stupid question, but-
I loaded it, have it, but can't seem to get movies to play on it.
Do I need to load the program onto the SD that my flicks are on?
I have it on my Ipaq and the movies are on disk.
I'm new to the handheld scene, so please be kind.

bshwalker (12-17-2006) - v0.72RC1
Never mind. I figured it out by accident.

Rem (12-29-2006) - v0.72RC1
I've loved this program for years now, I got a new Cingular 8525 (AKA HTC Hermes, TyTn). I found that a default installation of TCPMP would allow me to select a movie to play but as soon as the file begins to play the whole screen jitters and tears up. At this point you can't operate the program since it's not viewable, you must close it. Touching the screen switched to landscape and the video is watchable then. If you close the app and open it again, it loads the video file and tears up again.

After several re-installs (to get to the setup screens before selecting a video to test), I found that you can configure the program to work.

On a fresh install, select Options>Video> change the video driver from the default "ATI IMAGEON Decoder" to "Raw FrameBuffer". I found that with this change, it seems to work perfectly!

Tommy (12-30-2006) - v0.72RC1
@bshwalker

Have TCPMP on the device, and the media on card, that gives the best performance.

mertdk (01-04-2007) - v0.72RC1
is the link broken?

Jenny (01-08-2007) - v0.72RC1
I tried to use it to play a Matroska Media File but failed. It said that Video codec (RealVideo 9) not supported by the player. I also tried RealOne player 2.028 and failed again. Any suggestion?

Fritz34 (01-14-2007) - v0.72RC1
I installed the software, but it says that MPEG4 AAC Audio decoder is not included and as a result I have no sound. Does anyone know how to fix this?

von_piehl (01-18-2007) - v0.72RC1
Note that AAC support for TCPMP is no longer offered on the official site. However, some sites like rarewares.org hosts the AAC plug-in (see the page at http://www.rarewares.org/aac.html ). The PPC plug-in can be found at http://www.rarewares.org/files/aac/tcpmp_aac_plugin.windows_mobile.0.66.zip . In addition to setting up TCPMP, make sure you also start aac.setup.0.66.exe in the ZIP file (or, transfer aac.ARM.CAB inside aac.cabs.0.66.zip to the PDA and install it there). After that, TCPMP will gain seamless AAC support.

gjdgjd (01-19-2007) - v0.72RC1
There was an earlier question about playing files over networks. I have this installed on an SPV M2000 and it will stream and play MP3 off my network no problem. You just type the share like \\level1\level2 - please note this is case sensitive on my SPV with Mobile 2003SE (so \\LEVEL1 works and \\level1 does not) and the case is not necessarily the same case that you see on the PC screen! It will not stream and play DivX videos that it plays with no problem if they are on the local SD card. Is this "normal" and if not is there any trick? I have also tried the 0.81RC1Beta (which I think is the last free one) and it has the same problem.

Obi (01-24-2007) - v0.72RC1
All i have to say is WOW!

It works in my German MDA Compact II (Smartphone) wonderful.

Very nice.

kazbluesky (01-25-2007) - v0.72RC1
gjdgjd, thanks for telling me about 0.8.1. I just downloaded it and it seems to work fine (subtitle support, and aac plus, mpeg4, it also plays some home movies that used to jam up on me with 0.72 but now dont) Thanz, I appreciate it.

TCPMP - FANTASTIC free program for movies and music.

stami (02-02-2007) - v0.72RC1
Number of comments speak for it!!! Is the best Video player so far and for many years. Current version supports 24!!! different file types, and Countless of parameters. Something which may need improvement is graphics of interface.

Oliver Kay (02-25-2007) - v0.72RC1
what about the subtitles plugin? it's the single missing thing to this wonderful application for PDAs ...

mudroads (03-11-2007) - v0.72RC1
Not so good with wmv, on my IPAQ1950, but otherwise worked faultlessly. Very good.

patlucas (05-02-2007) - v0.72RC1
Works great on my IPAQ 2490 running WM5| No so good with WMV though.

wingmanjd (05-14-2007) - v0.72RC1
ipaq h4155, WM2003, 4GB SD card, Internal 802.11b

With its many plugins, this program is one of the best media players out there. Works wonderfully with nearly any movie I tried it with. It does seem, however, to choke a bit on video scenes with lots of blue (maybe white as well?). If the video is a high end bitrate, dropping the video quality can improve the fps rate considerably. Many tweaks and cached settings can also help.

This program can even stream files via my wireless. No more waiting for files to copy!

9.9/10 (doesn't play ac3 due to copyright concerns)

Michael Nguyen (05-15-2007) - v0.72RC1

With this addon: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=196939 you can play downloaded Youtube videos on TCPMP (*.flv files)

salvegladiator (07-07-2007) - v0.72RC1
Excellent software, works awesome with smartphone Qtek s200 i downloaded from http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/ went fine.

Neila04 (07-11-2007) - v0.72RC1
This program works very well in my Qtek9000. It is the better video player I have found. In addition it plays audio streaming like asx if you open an streaming URL and there is a network connection. I hear my favorite Internet radios with TCPMP.

joka (08-04-2007) - v0.72RC1
a bit of help? am encoding files using pocket divxencoder v.0.3.60 but when playing on my htc p3600 pocket pc (using tcpmp), it kinda scrambles the screen, defects appear and you cannot use the interface due to the scrambled screen... you cannot even exit the program! thanks in advance.

joka (08-04-2007) - v0.72RC1
if poss... any chance of giving the best encoding settings used for a pocket pc?

La_Z_Roy (08-05-2007) - v0.72RC1
Joka,

The problem might not be your encoder, but your 'video' settings on TCPMP. Go to Settings-> Video-> Video Driver & set the driver to Raw FrameBuffer. Anything else will slow the playback down or (in DirectDraw's case) scramble the video like crazy. This has been my experience, anyway. Hope this helps.

Tommy (08-06-2007) - v0.72RC1
My best setup advice is to have TCPMP in main memory, and the video on the SD/CF card, so data only needst to run one way.

Make sure the video is encoded to the ressolution of your screen 320*240/640*480, since rendering of screensize is using an awfull lot of CPU power, which you don't have on a PPC.

Use low to mid level picture quallity, and only low end sound, will also improve on performance.

Hi everyone..

just two quick questions:

- I have a HP Ipaq 610c/614c. Is it a smartphone or PPC? There are two cabs in the site and I am really confused about whether my ipaq is one or the other...

- TCPMP can play flash video. Should I install the flash plugin from Adobe after/later/along with/instead/never mind?

Thanks a lot,

Leo

@llagos
Your iPAQ is a PPC (It has a touch screen)
No need for other external flash plugins to play videos, just install all the codecs from TCPMP and you should be good to go. Adobes Flash player is not working on Win Mobile any way.
If you are talking about Youtube videos, you do need the "flv" plugin:

This version does not work at all on HTC Touch Pro (WM6.1 Professional on Qualcomm DualARM CPU).
It crashes upon startup.

Same problem with the HTC diamond (o2 XDA Ignito)

Crashing upon startup *sulk* :)

@ Frontier and Noodleman
Try the v0.8 alpha found at xda's site. I used 0.72 and then overwrote the files within the v0.8 alpha zip file.

TCPMP... I am using this player since more than year, this is one of the best player I have seen. It plays almost all video/audio files (In order to play some video files you need to install plug-ins).

I get the following error message on my HTC Fuze running Pocket PC 6.1, but I even tried the smartphone version to see if that would work.

Crash [OK]
Unexpected failure. Please send "crash.txt" to the developers. Program will now exit.
