Fans of Backgammon, rejoice: BGLightCE offers you one of the most successful versions (under an GNU/GPL licence) of your favourite game.
Graphically, the board and pieces are personalisable. You can download skins from their site and some skins come preinstalled as well as a tutorial on how to create your own.
Moving the pieces is done with a simple click (and not using a "Drag & Drop" as with its rivals Pocket Friendly Backgammon or Backgammon), this means that the order of the dice is important (thus a button to switch the order): a little confusing at first.
It is not possible to play with 2 players. The AI has 3 levels, being the novice that I am, I couldn't not evaluate them.
Also, stakes is supported (including the little cube on the side). Even to the level of surrending: the adversary can refuse if the proposed winnings is not judged sufficient.
To finish, you can choose whether to display the number of moves remaining, the number of games that constitute a match and some other options.
In short, the best Backgammon in our database to date.

This is a great program. It is challenging to play, easy to use, and with the alternative board graphics (available at the developers website) it looks great. It even outranks a $20 backgammon game that I own. I wish I found this first. High praise to Andy Rudnitsky for developing this great freeware game.

I agree with kermit - very good game, strong AI, configurable interface. Engine is from GNU Gammon.

This is a simply superb piece of software. The graphics are clear and appealing, and the method of play is almost intuitive -- it does take a little while to get used to the dice-swapping option.
It's worth reading the Wikipedia entry on backgammon. From this we learn that BGLightCE plays the game to the highest standard. I'm a beginner, but the game has already moved up to intermediate standard.
Absolutely first rate.

Anyone know where I can download this - the above link doesn't work. Thanks

Supplement to my original post: I'm afraid it cheats. You need to look elsewhere on the Web for details of exactly how it does this, but after I got tired of its amazing ability to shake double dice in moments of crisis, I deleted it.
