NewsReader is a program that has taken a while to appear. It is the first freeware NNTP client (newsgroup reader) capable of working online. It is true that the web forums have become more and more important to the detriment of Usenet. But the latter still has its fans, not only because you only load the news each time without having to reload an entire webpage. What's more, you can synchronise, happily read offline, write your response and then send them all at once.
This program is absolutely perfect: no option is missing. After creating an account - choose a server that can be anonymous or not (with the syntax login:passwd@nntp.server), then some newsgroups - it is enough to synchronise what you want - starting with or without the message bodies. The message are stored by default in a sub directory of \My Documents but you can easily store them elsewhere. The presentation of the messages follows the discussion threads with the responses indented by a few pixels, it is perfect for finding them. The program allows the ability to respond, which makes it better than Kawara. Little problem: I have tried many of the encoding schemes from the list provided but no of them display accented characters correctly, it's a shame...
I am enthusiastic about this excellent NNTP client, the best by far in freeware. You only have to synchronise with the Pocket PC in its cradle connected to the on-line PC in the morning, and everything is ready to read while you are on public transport.
Note : version 3.x is no longer freeware! But version 2.2.0.8 is still available on the author's site.

Excellent news (usenet) reader for PocketPCs. Works fine on my HP iPAQ hx4700 (Windows Mobile 2003SE). The biggest pro for this news reader is that (since it is writen from primary non-english speaking guy) supports many character sets and 8bit encodings!

This is not working on my PDA with WM5. :( It only says that it is using an unsupported file and I should get a newer version of the software.
