Crosswords is a program that allows you play SCRABBLE®. And yes, that name is a trademark of Hasbro, thus the need to find a different name.
Its great advantage over other similar (commercial) programs is that it permits other dictionaries: an English, French and Spanish one. Note that I'm talking about the dictionaries, the menus are still in English. These dictionaries are modifiable and only take up a small amount of memory, it's perfect. On the other hand, there are a few little ergonomic details that could be improved, especially since the resolution of our machines in relation to the size of the board doesn't help.
Of course, when you aren't a specialist and the machine gets to use its dictionary you can expect to be thoroughly trounced. So, it seems to me to be more of a training tool (it provides the optimum solution).

can someone pull up the color codes used in the screenshot for me? and explain to me why the last word entered appears in black? Or where I can find the previous version? my colors were all screwed up when I redownloaded, can't get the sequence right, last word entered can't change from black/blue combo for some reason. thanks!

Crosswords has become my favorite game on my PPC. I've been playing it for over 6 months, and never get tired of playing it. It is extremely well written. I've spoke with the developer Eric House several times via email, and told him how great his game is. It is without a doubt, the best free PPC Scrabble game you can find.
Under Crosswords preferences, you can choose to play against a "Smart Robot", or not. This option makes the game either easy or more difficult depending what you check.
The word in black in the screenshot above, shows the last word played by your opponent (ie. the Robot). In the above case, the Robot made the first move in the game.
If you want to SAVE a game in the middle, just select FILE > EXIT from the menu. Exiting the game automatically saves it. Then the next time you start Crosswords, it will bring you right back into the game you saved.
Personally, I play the game using the BasEnglish2to8 dictionary, which Eric made available for free download on his website. It is a medium sized dictionary, and gives me a reasonable chance of winning against the Smart Robot.

Correction from my prior comment, the CollegeEng2to8 is the medium sized dictionary. It contains 41,871 words (101K bytes). The BasEnglish2to8 is a tiny dictionary containing only 799 words (4K bytes).
Also, Eric House placed a very detailed online manual for the game on his website. It is complete with screenshots.
