this patch is a must if you are running an application based on this framework.
it seems that lots of improvements are done and all the programs i have tried loads faster

Contrary to text above which is obsolate and intended for .NET Compact Framework 1.0, new .NET Compact Framework 2.0 is not included in Windows Mobile 2003/2003SE/5.0 ROMs. You have to install it explicitly in order to run applications that depend on it.

Ouch! Looks like the download for this (PC installer only, requiring Microsoft Installer) is 24.6MB. Not sure how much of that ends up on the device, but ... good thing it's the compact version!

IIRC about 5MB will go to main memory. You can't install it somewhere else, like on a card or in iPAQ file store.

I updated the review with a link to Werner "Menneisyys" Ruotsalainen's blog : he explains how to move it to a storage card :)

Torgamm > slightly confusing, actually this (as also stated in the linked tutorial) cannot be used for older devices, ppc2002 and below. Hard as I tried, there were no working version for my ASUS MyPal A600 (PPC2002, StrongARM PXA250 300Mhz - still a fine machine) in any of the 2.0 framework packages.
After many attempts and nearly giving up, I googled up this link:
http://www.himss.org/conference_2006/schedule/exhibition_downloadPPC.asp
which contains both working link to the correct framework AND to a CAB version. This allows great tools like the DictionaryEditor to work on slightly outdated devices. Which obviously makes it a MUST-HAVE!! :-) So I hope you will put up a version of the file(s) for us old-timers too. Thanks for a great site.

NETCF2_sp1 cannot, in my many attempts, be moved to a storage card using WM5. If you follow Werner's tutorial, you finish up with the device running NETCF2 only, not the sp1 version. Werner's tutorial states that WM5 allows you the choice to install on a storage card, and this is true (ie. you are offered the choice during installation), but ... it doesn't !
The upshot is that the sp1 version (needed to run a an increasing number of applications) is irrevocably installed in ROM
It seems Microsoft is absolutely determined to cripple these devices by using as much memory as possible for the O/S !

Actually you are making a mistake. From my own experience...
If you use the NET Compact Framework v2.0 SP1 CABS then they install to the DEVICE memory.
If you use the NET Compact Framework v2.0 SP1 EXE from Microsoft then YOU CAN easily install it to a MEMORY CARD.
Try it, it works for some strange reason.

Thanks, default.
But I've tried both the CAB and EXE installations
On an iPAQ HW6910 (WM5), neither installs to the card.
Worse, the EXE installer tells me to uninstall the existing version from both the PC and the PDA (this makes a real mess), and after uninstalling very thoroughly (cleaning the Registry etc), it still tells me I have the older version
I've given up - its way too messy and silly

It appears SP2 requires ActiveSync 4.0 and up to install on the PPC. If you are still using 3.x, you have to find the .cab file, transfer it to the PPC and install it from there. Wish they had made the install.cab names clearer, lol!

Thanks for the heads up KDragon :)
