PocketStreets is a program to display city maps. More and more maps are available, like most of the biggest french and german cities. In general, the maps are quite detailed, and some additional informations (like subway stations) can be displayed, but these are not available on all the maps. The address find function is very powerful, the program knows the smallest streets which are not even displayed on the normal map view. You can mark places on the maps to easily find them again later. But this is already everything you can do with the program, you can't let it find an itinerary for you, and it's hard to find your way on your own. So the program is mostly useful to find a place without great precision.

I'm not sure where i can get maps that are compatible with this version. The ones i downloaded from microsoft.com are only pocket streets 2005 compatible. I think the new version costs $40 bundled with the PC version.

There is a conversion program available at http://revolution.cx/rcx/pstreets.htm to convert maps to use with PS2001, and a link there to maps for 2004. (Don't know if it will convert 2005 maps.)

I've used both the free version PS 2001 and the retail version PS 2003, and the major difference in the newer retail versions, is you have address numbers in addition to street names. The address numbers allow you to quickly search for a specific address. But if that isn't important to you, then PS 2001 is a fantastic free map program. I've also used the PS 2001 map converter mentioned in the prior post, and it works great.

This link is to the 2005 map download page. At the bottom of that page, is the link to the 2004 map download page. Go to it and all the maps there can be downloaded and work with Pocket Streets 2001 after conversion with PSConvert.
