UKNote is the equivalent of Notepad on our dear old PCs. Ideal for those who find Pocket Word too bloated for opening a simple text file or who bemoan the impossibility of opening a file whose extension is not recognized by the latter.
Cut/copy/paste, new line, search/replace, Go To, inserting date and time, display fonts, setting tab widths, last files opened: it’s all there.
By integrating the DLL GSGetFile (which you’ll find in the utility File Dialog Changer), it allows files to be opened from or saved to any folder on the Pocket PC. By default it uses *.txt for file selection, but you can also select *.ini files or show all files.
Where it differs decidedly from its competitors PHM Notepad or Tillanosoft PocketNotePad is at the coding level.
In fact, say good-bye to those little squares that take the place of carriage returns in certain documents, thanks to how ends of paragraphs are handled by Macintosh, Unix and Windows (CR, LF and CRLF, respectively). Furthermore, its support for the three major standards ASCII, Unicode and UTF-8 -- (UKNote also handles EUC for kanji, apparently unsupported on French-language operating systems) -- should make for near universal compatibility.
Nonetheless, I ran into a few problems of stability when saving UTF-8 files. Besides that, by default new files are coded in ASCII. Think of switching at least to Unicode if you don’t want to see all your accents disappear!
Despite all this, UKNote is, in my mind, the current “must-have” among NotePads.

This is a great application and it allows you to finally edit resco explorer's registry exports. My only regret is that this program will crash if you try to save in UTF-8 format, which I need. I wonder if there is another UTF-8 text editor...

Using "search" causes my system to freeze and I have to take a soft reset.
|
This would be a great text editor if using search did not lockup the device. Hopefully the author will fix it soon.

hopelessly this program doesn't work with "open with" from explorer. other editor does! wish uknote would improve this.

This nice text editor will open files < (less than) 64K (maybe slightly less). This is better than most of the popular text editors for Win CE or higher, like PocketNotePad 4, Notepad, and more than most people ever need. The Reviewer called it right when he rated it the current "must-have" among notepads. It is also one of the smallest text editing programs, at only 42K in size. If you need one that opens files > than 64K, however (most people don't), there are a couple of freeware text editors that do this: "Made" and "cke". Both can be found on this site.
