Anyone looking for a relaxing little game that doesn't require too much thinking should move on. Basically, Matrix Game, while looking like a noughts and crosses game with neat graphics, will give your neurones a beating. Especially those used for mental calculation.
The idea is simple: two players, one of which can be controlled by the Pocket PC, take turns placing numbers on a grid (a click on the grid, then a click on the chosen number): 9 squares, 9 numbers. The winner is the one with the best score... and that's where it gets complicated.
First off, the score, called determinant which is displayed at the end of the game in calculated by the sum of the 2 scores obtained by the players, given that the left-hand player has positive points, and the other has negative points (a small indicator besides the players' names is visible). The winner is the one who has the highest absolute value.
To get the highest absolute value, you have to get the sum of 3 products of 3 numbers. The numbers aren't taken at random, but according to a precise schema... and different for each player! You can find them on this English language page or in the ReadMe file placed in the game directory.
I must admit I never really got into this game. Maybe because I had enough trouble just understanding the rules. With a little strategy, this game might just become addictive... maybe?!
Note: the .Net Compact Framework is required for Pocket PC 2002.
