Microsoft Reader allows you to read ebooks in the LIT format, one of the three main digital book formats (along with Acrobat PDF and Mobipocket PRC).
Until recently, Microsoft Reader came integrated on the Pocket PC's ROM, but this is no longer to case since the release of Windows Mobile 2003 SE. Now you have to download it if you want to read LIT format ebooks on a Pocket PC.
To work correctly, Microsoft Reader needs to be installed in main memory (the actual books can be put onto a Storage Card if desired). You have to activate the program to access digital signed ebooks.
Microsoft Reader stores your ebooks in a library. It uses ClearType technology to display the text. It also has "reflowing" which automatically repaginates when you change the font size.
You can also add annotations to the text, either as marks, underlining, notes or drawings.
Free ebooks can be found at:
- For dictionaries go to Microsoft
There are also programs that let you create your own ebooks in the LIT format:
- Michisoft Reader Studio
- ReaderWorks Standard
- Read in Microsoft Reader (an "add-on" for Microsoft Word 2000 & XP).

Pro: crisp text display, very good page layout, can find eBooks everywhere on your pocketPC and storage cards, seamless integration with free desktop reader, a lot of free eBook creator software as well as a free MS-Word plugin available; free, regularly updated.
Con: _Slow_, especially when indexing after opening a book for the first time; not very configurable; annotations have to be stored in main memory and no where else; not very good for managing a lot of books; when buying secure eBooks in .lit-format you have to download with Internet Explorer - alternative browsers won't do; the excruciatingly flawed activation process, limited activation (only for six devices, and additional activations are hardly if ever granted, so don't buy too many new stuff, or you won't be able to read your secure eBooks anymore).

Microsoft Reader was my first choice, but I have gradually switched to others, especially Mobipocket reader.
(There's a free Mobipocket version as well, and a paid one, which is more configurable (a.o. with a nifty scroll feature, like reading an autocue))

About the annotations: if you don't want to keep your annotations stored in your main memory, store them on somewhere else and remember to open your eBooks by tapping on the annotation file (*.ebo).
If you transfer the annotations, and reopen the eBook, you''l notice MS Reader will start to write a new annotation file in your main memory in the "my documents\annotations" directory.
Open your new eBook, let MS Reader write the annotation, tranfer this ebo-file to a place of your convenience, and open the book through the ebo-file. A program like Booklib (http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=782) can help you manage your eBook list: let Booklib refer to the ebo-file instead of the .lit-file.

It is actually possible to install it on a storage file or in file store (for the iPAQ users) and activate it. The file udhid.dll, which can be located and found with the windows explorer when the pocket pc is cradled, should be placed in the \windows directory of the pocket pc. udhid.dll is a file which is responsible for the hardware ID while activating.
Some people report that activation when installed to storage only worked before they resetted their device after installation - as has to be done, to install fonts etc. For me it worked also.
Another point to remember is that if you already have a copy of MS Reader on your unit, don't only uninstall it from there, but _also_ uninstall it with the add/remove programs dialog in your desktop's control panel: otherwise MS Reader will use the old installation files from your desktop.

Graphics are perfect. The best thing about this reader is that you reading a book divited into small paragraphs which make it easily read. No bugs founded. I have hx2750 WM2003SE.

I'm having trouble getting MS Reader to recognse where my ebook is located. Have tried "my documents", root directory. Nothing, either with original MS Reader(ROM) installation, or with this one I put on SD card. Am using a Navman Pin570, WM 2003SE. Have registered & re-registered on Windows site to activate. Am using MS ActiveSync 4.5, downloading ebook on PC,then dragging files across. The only files appearing in Library are the two help files. Can anyone please point me in right direction?

The download link for Microsoft Reader doesn't appear to be valid anymore. Is this available anywhere else?

Actually, I just answered my own question. I found a summary of the revised links for this at <http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.pocketpc.ebooks&tid=dc4baea0-e034-4d96-aab5-0d4d686fe1fe&cat=en_US_94693ec8-c57b-4c20-bc5c-0ee2b1010375&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=&p=1>.

Useless program. Most of books are in *.txt, *.html or *.fb2 formats (not *.prc or *.lit) - so you need another reader.
