Hitchhiker - v0.4 Beta1 Categorie: Network Utilities
Screen Shot
Hitchhiker is a tool to help to connect to WiFi networks and thus to the Internet. The intergace could not be simpler, as there's a huge Connect button. Its main advantage is that it can configure itself almost on its own to better use the standard Pocket PC resources: so you see the traditional OS balloons. As for security, it supports WEP and WPA-PSK keys.

Hitchhiker is a perfect program for Sunday "wardrivers" and its sorting functions make it a must for those who don't want to have to worry about all the technical details.

I downloaded this program, went on an interview. Started it up while waiting for an interminable amount of time until someone called me. It started fine. And, then found a bunch of networks, and then crashed no matter how many times I restarted my PPC. I'm running an iPAQ 5555. I was able to connect NOT using hitchhiker with no issues.

This software had me drooling when I heard about it. Unfortunately, it just didn't live up to the hype.

I even couldn't start it up on my iPAQ 4150

On my 5450 it worked _almost_ fine. The options screen just didn't have a background. But it scanned and found Wifi points.

I can see the several acces points but cannot connect to them using the connect button.

It worked on my MDA III, but it has a big problem: it uses DHCP service, but in my home networking I use fixed IPs... (and MAC filtering) :)
Any idea to set fixed IP and dont try DHCP?

I installed Hitchhiker 0.2 before i went on holiday to the US. It worked every single time I found an unsecured wireless network. It was a godsend. I upgraded to 0.3 halfway through the trip and it was even better. I'm using the HP iPaq hx4700 and it hasn't given me the slightest problem.

Amazing...I live in Pittsburgh where wifi was at a minimum till I found this program...works seemlessly!!!...I am able to find hotspots no knew existed...Thank you!!!! you neeed to have at least v0.31...

dkb218 (10-19-2005) - v0.32
I installed this "thing" on my HP 6315. While it did find hotspots, it prevented me from logging on to T-Moble hotspots. Decided to remove it. After removing it, my Ipaq developed a terrible memory leak that drain all the memory in a matter of minutes requiring soft resets. I finally had to proform a hard reset to get my device working correctly. [In researching this app on the net, a few forurms are under the impression that this app is sending your vital information to gosh-knows-where]

Caution: This has caused me to carry out Hard Resets.

I have been using it occasionally for a few weeks, and it seemed OK. But more recently I decided to use it frequently to connect to my home network. This is when the problems started.... My PDA2K slows down so much it cant operate - this is when soft resets were needed. When I was carrying out a soft reset the PDA would not restart, and it just constantly displayed the i-mate logo. I carried out a hard reset and installed only a few programmes I really needed - one of them being Hitchhiker.

Same problem as before with the soft resets and then I was forced to hard reset. This time I decided to give Hitchhiker a miss and installed the other programmes I needed. And my PDA is still very stable and has no problems.

Hitchhiker looks like a very good idea, and works very well. But the the problems it causes are not worth the risk of Hard Resets.

So far on my iPAQ H4350 this beats the cr*p out of both Wififofum and Pocketwinc. I like especially the fact that it gives you a lot of feedback, you know at every point exactly what the program is doing. Testing for a possible internetconnection by going to google (and showing so in the status bar) is one of the feats I greatly enjoy.

This program is therefore in my top 3 of must have (free) programs!

EastBoy (04-21-2006) - v0.4 Beta1
Did not even can start up on my Toshiba E755.=((
hope the developer may fix the bugs on next version. =))

desparado (04-24-2006) - v0.4 Beta1
tested the program on my Dell x51v (WM5) and it works. It is still a little buggy.
(i.e. sometimes it does not connect to my A/P)

bugmenot (06-13-2006) - v0.4 Beta1
i try out this application on my 6315 and has i started it it crash couldnt even use it
pocketwinc is better but its a limited version

Possibly/probably it's far too late to join here, but anyway...
HitchHiker 0.4b1 is running superbly on my LOOX 720, finding lots of APs and connecting easily to the open ones! ;)
The only nuisance is that this WiFi-utility is storing its reporting .XML files under \My Documents\HitchHiker\History.
The point is if you are going on a somewhat longer wardriving tour you get virtually tons of stuff which means that the main RAM at some point is not available anymore for things it should be....
The other thing related to this is that after synchronizing the PDA via ActiveSync with the PC the whole stuff is also on the PC under \Documents and Settings\.....\History which could also affect the performance of the PC!
If somebody has an idea and is really stumbling over this text.....
Greetings from Germany
