Minimo is an open source Internet navigator for Windows Mobile, based on the Mozilla code. It offers innovative functions: tab managements, zoom, ...
Promising, but still in development, Minimo takes up a significant amount of space (10.9Mb). Happily, it works when installed on a storage card. Once run, it uses more than 10Mb of memory. Its size is expected considering the level of optimisation.
The interface, on the other hand, is very good. The menus and tab management features are very serviceable.
Minimo is worth a try before they announce development is finished and it is up to the quality of its big brother, Firefox.
[Edit] For OS prior to WM5, you must use v 0.016 at this URL

I installed Minimo 0.013 on my Dell X51v. It wouldn't run; it stalled at the splash screen. I removed it and restored Minimo 0.012, which continues to work correctly.
|
It works on my iPAQ h2210, but it's a litle slower than 0.012 (yes that is possible), and the user interface has gotten worse, with the URL input panel placed at the buttom, and no way to remove the keyboard, once it's popped up.
Sorry guys, back to the drawing board again :o(

I installed Minimo 0.014 on my Dell X51v. I had the same unfortunate experience I reported with version 0.013. Minimo stalled at the splash screen. I removed version 0.014 and reinstalled version 0.012.

Tried Minimo 0.014 on my iPaq 6340, prog. froze at splash screen...

You have to _completely_ delte your \Program Files\Minimo folder before installing new versions!
|
Thanks, MrMage. After uninstalling Minimo v0.012 and deleting the folder \Program Files\Minimo, I was able to install Minimo v0.014 successfully. Now it works. I do find v0.014 slow, and I have not yet mastered the interface. I'm still looking for a control to vary the UI text size, which used to exist in v0.012.

I installed it on my AximX30H, and it worked fine (a few versions have not). However, I still dont see any way of zooming the page itself (not the text). Ideally, you should be able to zoom out the page and magnify the text so a whole page is easily visible and the text is readable, and that is exactly what I have been doing with NetFront: setting the page zoom to 50% and text size to largest, which makes the non-pda version of just about every website look perfect on my pda. Also, the Minimo splash screen flooded my CPU and brought up pocket console, which was annoying.
When this program can zoom the whole page I'll delete NetFront.
I would have appreciated a "page zoom" in addition to a "text zoom". I don't see anything else in this pocket browser that isn't far superior to any other pocket pc browser. Congrats to the minimo team!

v0.014
I get an error when trying to view and SSL site, like https://mail.google.com/mail. Other than that and the fact that the program loads very slow, great browser.

can the sony ericsson T290i install the Minimo? please reply

v 0.015 is out!
|
Still a little rough around the edges (no way to import bookmarks, some options cannot be saved, etc.) but it is VGA aware and functions wonderfully as a freeware alternative to Opera or NetFront.
|
I tested v0.016 it on a MDA Compact II (WM2005). It works but there a lot of issues which should be solved before uses should use it. Still prefer PIE because it is slim, fast and works better and does not slow down the performance of the whole system. I also tried Opera Mini but forget this.
Minimo v0.016 3/10 points.

I tested Minimo a long time. I find it is nearly excellent. The thing I've to say is that the loading takes CACHE and time! I've to wait circa 45 seconds. And the best things on it are: he supports XUL and XML. The MS PocketIE do not support this ;-) 9/10 points for it!

Hi,
Just for information - Minimo development is ceased, but Mozilla with other corporations support will release the whole new WWW navigator. I hope it will be in near future...
|
I use Minimo 0.16, but only minimally (!) as an alternative to PIE.
The only benefits Minimo offers are that it displays my own website the way it should be rendered, and it supports some of the JavaScripts that fail in PIE.
As stated by others, Minimo swamps the memory of the device. When it's running on my x51v, even at 624 mHz, task switching slows down so much that I can hardly get anything done. It also loses the contents of my clipboard quite often, and always disables WM5's built-in word completion feature.
Also, Minimo will save neither web pages nor images. Those functionalities, and many more, are offered by ReenSoft's PIEPlus 2.2. It's not a browser, but just a plugin for PIE, so some of PIE's deficiencies remain, but I still highly recommend it, because it turns PIE into a complete web browser.
As for version 0.2, according to the blurb on the Mozilla website, it's supposed to support WM5. I'm using a WM5 device, and when I upgrade to 0.2 from 0.16, here's what happens: Everything seems OK until I log into a web forum, or any other site where message posting is done, such as here. As soon as I use my stylus to put the focus on a text field in the posting form, Minimo closes without so much as a warning or error message. I've never once posted successfully from Minimo 0.2, although I can do it from 0.16.
