If you have decided to take up Japanese this is an excellent freeware app to help you learn and revise. It is limited to katakana and hiragana but that is better than nothing. You can choose to hide the equivalent western text or the Japanese character in order to test your knowledge.
I don't have anything else to say about the program, it is written in Visual Basic and if you already have the runtime files in RAM, it will take up only 11kb of memory.
Note: the display will not be correct if you recopy the fonts hiragana.ttf and katakana.ttf to the directory \Fonts in \Windows. They are copied with the .VB during installation.
