Does the ActiveSync icon on the system tray bother you? You don't need ActiveSync to start-up with each reboot? Then KillAS is for you: you can automatically close the process (with or without confirm) and prevent it from re-launching until YOU tell it to.
Along the same lines, I prefer ActiveSync Toggle because it allows re-launching the application.

This program only works for me when ActiveSync is minimized. Other programs that toggle ActiveSync on and off do not always solve every problem for me.
Although it will not change the registry, the following batch file will kill ActiveSync on Windows XP:
killNT -f wcescomm
sleepNT 1
killNT -f wcesmgr
Just use a shortcut to ActiveSync to restart it. It should also restart automatically when you reboot your machine.
