Tombo - v2.0beta4 Categorie: Office
Screen Shot
Tombo is a hierarchical note management program.
At first glance, it seems very practical and I should say that the project is already very successful: to have notes organised in a tree is the dream of many users.
Sadly, it is ruined by the interface. To move a note, especially, is difficult as you have to play with Copy-Paste in order to see that which you have selected. The program does not react quickly enough and sometimes when you want to simply change a selection, you find that you have renamed a note or opened it. This is too bad as the product is very attractive.
It is also available for Windows, and allows synchronisation with ActiveSync.
A little effort with note management using the stylus, the possibility to convert them to tasks, and we will have an excellent product.

Tombo has become one of my most frequently used applications. I use it for jotting down and organizing notes about everything. There is both a Pocket PC version and a Win32 version, and notes can be synchronized between the two. I have used FlexWallet and other similar applications, and the big advantage of Tombo is that you can create hierarchical folders. Tombo is also much lighter and faster. Tombo stores the notes in text files rather than a proprietary database, and each file can be encrypted using a different password. The only missing feature is moving a memo- however this can be done by simply moving the text file or directory using Windows or Pocket PC explorer.

Dispite the negative comments given here (and the 6/10), I consider this the best app I ever had to store all the bits and pieces of information:
- passwords and account data (blowfish encrypted), tasks, diary, shoppinglist, ... ANYTHING!
- organize in a tree structure
- bloody fast search function
- multiplatform: runs on my desktop and PDA, notes get synced by ActiveSync
- no special format but clean text files
- auto note naming based on first line of text
- FREE and actively maintained (now at version 1.12)

I share Pétur's appraisal. Tombo has become one of my most frequently used applications. An important advantage is that notes are stored as ordinary .txt files, not in some database. As a result, they can easily be moved or copied between Tombo and other directories where they may be needed.

Two improvements I would like to see: At present, to copy or delete a note, one must first tap to select it, then tap and hold to open the context menu. It should be enough to tap and hold, both to select and to open the context menu. I would also like to see in the tree both .txt files and those files that I can open with an external application -- for example, spreadsheets.

Today is the first time I've tried Tombo, and it seems like a potentially very useful application. I really like that there are both Desktop and PocketPC versions of Tombo which share the same data by using ActiveSync. And I also agree that storing them as simple .txt files is a big plus. This way, you can create or generate .txt files with other apps as well, and then use them in Tombo, by copying them to the TomboRoot folder.

Only one minor setup note, is when I ran the desktop version in Windows XP, the default Tombo directory was C:\My Documents\Pocket_PC My Documents\TomboRoot. I had to modify this name to point to the actual location of my PocketPC's ActiveSync folder. It may be useful to point this out in the documentation, if it isn't already there. Windows XP users typically have \Documents and Settings\ in front of the \My Documents path name.

Release 1.13, 22 November 2004 Snapshot, has partially fixed the problem of requiring tap and then tap-and-hold. Just tap-and-hold now suffices to delete or copy a note. However, a tap, followed by tap-and-hold, is still required to paste a copied note into the correct folder. When a note is selected by tap-and-hold alone, it should be highlighted on the screen. At present, tap-and-hold selects the note for copying or deleting, but does not highlight it.

I love this program. I have been using it for about 1 month now and I can't function without it. I like the fact that it is in plain txt formatted files, which makes it simple to search for information using Total Commander 1.21. Plus I like the encryption function. And the search feature, super quick. I am using it with the Windows version so that when I take the memory stick from my iPaq and place it in the laptop, I can access the files. I give it 9! Yes a 9.

kripkee (01-26-2005) - v1.13
In the Tombo editor using the Transcriber SIP, an upstroke (the case change gesture) is treated as a capital letter 'J'. This does not happen in Phillipe Majerus' Notepad, nor in PocketWord.

zemacaco (02-24-2005) - v1.13
It's very effective. Plain files and synchronization with the desktop are great features.
If it can organize another document extensions(like attachments in ms-excel or word) it will take a 10 from me. But for the speed, friendly inteface, encryption, desktop version, files/directory structure and for not using .net it's easily worth a 9.

Pétur (04-12-2005) - v1.13
v1.14 has been released, just a minor bugfix release....
Just a quick remark to the users posting complaints here: mail the author, he reads and answers his mails!

Beryl (02-12-2006) - v1.16
The v 1.16 document states to use unregister.exe to get rid of earlier registry entries. Does anyone know where to find that app?

kripkee (02-13-2006) - v1.16
Beryl, in the .zip file there is a program regerase.exe for HPC arm that you can use for this purpose.
