Total Commander - v2.52 beta2 Categorie: File Tools
Screen Shot
This is a version of the Windows Commander for x86, made for the Pocket PC. Grown from the probably most famous Norton Commander, these file system explorers are a must-have if you want to perform more than just basic file operations. There is one single, and two two window modes, one with split window and one "virtual 2 window" mode, where you switch between the two using a small button, and you can also have a tree view of the Pocket PC's file system.
If you didn't already buy the Resco File Explorer, this is a program you should definitely try! It supports Tap&Hold, Drag&Drop, handles ZIP files and lets you do any change to the file's properties (date, time, attributes) you want. A file find is also included, as well as the possibility to beam files via infrared. With only 170kB, the size is very convenient, only network file access and file password protection would be nice to have. But we can always hope for the next update.

Update: support for Portrait/Landscape modes, an FTP client, Registry editor and LAN access are improvements included in version 2.x

The main feature I use on this (compared to using Pocket Explorer) is the zip feature. I've got this set as my defauly file manager and I'm happy to keep using it for a long time.

***** This is also my default browser. I haven't gone back to file explorer since. A must have!

I couldn't imagine trying to browse the file system without Total Commander's virtual mode (go to this directory, click a button, go to a different directory, select shortcut, and it creates one in the "other" window). The IrDa feature has been helpful when transferring between different versions of CE, and there's a version built for virtually everything, including CE 2.0 (hard to find 2.0 stuff). Built-in notepad for viewing small (64K or less) files of any kind. Customize the toolbar by dragging anything onto it, then editing. Only complaint: shortcuts include the .EXE in the name, so unless you want everything to say Program.exe, you have to go rename it. Wish list: hex view mode with search.

One of the few must-haves on a PPC, I have found Total Commander's "virtual two window mode" indispensible! The built in notepad is great for tweaking a skin file or any other small text document. The GUI is not noteworthy, but it gets the job done. Though I like GSFinder+ slightly better, I still keep Total Commander and use it often. Well done!

A note about the update: I liked that Total Commander was a stand-alone EXE (one file) because it is typically the first thing I put on a new PocketPC. When v2 came out I was disappointed because it had external dependencies now. For those purests like me who would be interested, just delete the add-ons and you get the updated version which is stand-alone (it's a plug-in interface, delete the plug-ins to get it the way you are used to).

I used to swear by the pre-installed file explorer, I didn't see the reason to install anything else, because things on a PDA don't need to be complicated. I only had this program so that I could zip up batches of files. But then, oddly enough, my file explorer quit. How or why, I don't know. I discovered then just the sheer brilliance of this program!! Goodbye File Explorer!! And EZ Unzip is gone too, this program can do it all!!
12/10!!

I am using the new 2.1 beta in my Axim, very nice, works fine. The best is the Zip option, wich i was looking for since i got my pocket pc. Very nice software, a must-have!

My favorite windows explorer. Features like LAN connection, single/double click, notepad, infrared transfer, quick and parametric find files, multiselect files/folders, etc, are very usefull. The best of all is virtual two window mode were you can simply toggle/copy/move between two explorers. Bug flawless.
However perfect is nothing, I hope next version support bluetooth.

Ver 2.5beta

This program is a MUST for anyone who uses a file explorer. I've never gone back to the WM version of a file explorer since installing this program. I love using the virtual two window mode, allowing copy/move functions to be performed with ease. Also, the extra plugins (FTP, LAN browser, and registry editor) are great. The entire program takes up little space (~400k) compared with what functions it performs. It makes creating shortcuts a breeze, editing small setting files simple, and best of all, it's free!

The ultra-top-most excellent file manager I ever saw! The thing I have to flaw is that he doesn't support to duplicate files(the FileManager; here in Germany Datei Explorer, can duplicate files)! 11/10 püoints!

twfx (08-18-2007) - v2.0
A great FILE manager. It is even a little better than Resco Explorer in File system management. But it is short of Network supporting and registry editing.

cross_wine2000 (08-21-2007) - v2.0
hello everybody! i'm a newbie here and I don't know whether this app will work on my Cingular 8125. What's this "ARM/XSCALE" anyway?

yes i must agree this is a fine file manager indeed!
one of the very few freeware programs that reside on my ipaq
very nifty/handy ftp/lan features (twin panel oh yeah)
internal notepad and zip are great
my only gripe so far is the lack of (send via) bluetooth support
wishlist: OpenWith option?
Price: Great
Score: 94%

if there is anything better id like to know!

Incredible...! Is one of the better utilities for a PocketPC.
I start years ago with DOS Norton Commander, then I am using frequently FAR for Windows. Is as NC but with LAN and FTP plugins. Do you try it ? Is ecellent: http://www.rarlabs.com/
Now, T Commander has that plugins. I can access to the Registry, I can edit and save files of my sites using FTP plugin and I can browse, upload, download, edit and save files on my Desktop from the iPAQ with the LAN plugin. Despite it not convert files, I can edit all files on both machines. Activesynk don't let that. Very, very good. *****

This is an update to my updated comment update :) The author has made many improvements and enhancements to TC/PPC in this latest release, not the least of which is the removal of ".EXE" on shortcuts [see my previous comment]. He also adds bluetooth support for devices that use the Microsoft bluetooth stack, and has full VGA support, as well as tweaks to the font rendering so you can get 1/2 pixel more space than you could before :) Again, this is one sweet file explorer!

The Foliator (08-26-2008) - v2.51
I have been using TC Pocket on a regular basis since 2003, and guess what? The best just got even better, because version 2.51 of TC Pocket can now open and create encrypted Zip files.

Also, Mr. Ghisler, the program's author, maintains an excellent forum covering all versions and aspects of Total Commander.
