This is the only true freeware chess game that I have found. It relies on the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework, that you must already have installed prior to installing the game.
There are 3 ways to play this game: against your PocketPc, on the web against another computer, or on the web against an online player. I have only played this game against my PocketPC but I had fun. I suppose that the Desktop version would be better to use if you want to play online.
I like the graphics even though when in Enhanced mode the Whites must play against the "Reds". As for the 4 levels of play, I would not advance too quickly because it seems the PocketPc plays well, yet quickly.
With such a small usage amount of memory 164Kb (not counting .NET), I suggest you try it and add any comments to complete this brief hands-on
The version 2.0 has better skill levels (not tested).

This is the first Freeware verison of chess i could find. Game is great. You can also change the color. From Red/White to black/white. I would give this game a 5 out of 5

Great game, but there is still another free chess program, in my view, much better in AI, a bit bigger than the one you repport, but nevertheless superb in strategy.
It's Scott's pocketchess 1.1 for pocket PC in the address http://www.eskimo.com/~scottlu/wince/ppcchess.html
I should give this shareware a 8/10 in your overall score, as it doesn't have the option to change colors, as well as it doesn't have the ability to load PGN format games (pocket game notation).

This program has great graphics and plays a good game, but its end game is lacking. Instead of checkmating me it will attempt to queen every one of its pawns. It also doesn't avoid draw by repitition. I agree that pocketchess is a much better game overall. 7/10

Very nice game; that the end game may be weak doesn't bother me much, I'm not a very good player.
It seems to be the only freeware chess program again since the competition (PocketChess) has gone payware, at least for the PPC & Palm versions called "DeLuxe" now (both US$ 19,99).

I agree completely with Banjo009. Good graphics, but terrible endgame.
I would highly recommend CEBoard 2.0 at http://www.zanchetta.net/CEBoard/ which I believe is freeware. It now has two (2) chess engines included with it an a wonderful annotation feature. You can also alter the color of the squares and there are several included chess sets.
Chess v. 2.0 is good eye-candy, but its beauty is only skin deep.
6/10
