This is one of my most favorite freeware. I have copied it to my start menu so that I can use it as a toggle to turn on after a reset. This should be standard on PPC. A must have.
|
The different to version 1.21 :
If you make a shortcut in your autostart folder, no dialog box will come.
The FileDialogChanger use now the GsGetFile.dll instead of tGetFile.dll.
|
Wery cool plugin. This is better than tgetFile.dll.In tGetFile.dll can you only plugin in some apps but File Dialog Changer GsGetFile.dll can you use too all apps. The only is you can't make a folder with GsGetFile.dll.A make a folder can you with tGetFile.dll.This is very nice if this function be maked.

An absolute must have for anyone who maintains the filesystem OUTSIDE of "My Documents". This utility hooks the OS - S O M E H O W - [if anybody knows _how_ he hooks the OS dialog, please let me know! It doesn't appear to stay resident in memory - Remove underscores: michael_w_@_techemail_._com] so that when you go to open a file with ANY program, a File Open dialog appears that lets you see everything, not just "My Documents", including flash cards. My biggest complaint about the browser is that it doesn't remember where you last were (always starts in \My Documents, ironically). For apps where you need to browse to the same location on your flash card over and over, it's a bit tedius and it would be easy to fix. I've tried contacting the author several times and never heard back. Either way, highly recommended.
|
Addition: I just tried making a shortcut to it in \Windows\Startup, but the dialog still appears??? I've wanted it in my startup since I found it, but don't want the dialog every time.
|
The download website is in Japanese. To get this program to work, download the FileDialogChanger and also gsGetFile.dll from the developers website. Then after unzipping the files on your PC, copy the gsGetFile.dll and filedlgchg.cpl to your PPC windows directory. Then go into your PPC windows directory with a File browser, such as gsFinder+, and tap on filedlgchg.cpl to execute it. (if you dont see the .cpl file, it means you need to set your File browser to view hidden files). Once executed, it will display a startup screen, with a box you need to check to make the program work.
This nice little utility overcomes a missing feature which should have been built into PPC OS file management.
|
OK, if it useless, delete it!
Pease of crap, could not install it. If a developer wants to make it soft usefull to others, at least make a least freandly installation for it!
|
olegvj is wrong!
Installed fine, working fine.
Maybe olegvj should use 'friendly' MS file dialog instead
|
Yes, I agree with twist. It works fine in my XDAII since a few months ago. After install, it can be found under the Tools/Save as of pocket Word/Excel/... and other applications.
|
olegvj, did you read everyone else's comments ? Most people got it to work fine and love the program! I personally think it is one of the most useful programs I have installed on my PPC. I gave complete installation instructions in my prior comment above.
Once it is installed, it creates an icon in your PPC's System Settings screen. This icon will let you turn the program on/off, and lets you exclude applications you don't want the program to affect.
Once you execute FileDialogChanger, it remains on, unless you turn it off in Settings Screen. And once on, anytime a "Save As" menu is displayed from any application, the FileDialogChanger "Save As" dialog will be used in place of the normal PPC Windows version of the "Save As".
The FileDialogChanger "Save As" dialog gives you the ability to save a file ANYWHERE on your PPC including your Storage Card, whereas the normal PPC's built-in "Save As" dialog only allows you to save the file in specific locations, such as /My Documents. That is the beauty of FileDialogChanger!
I absolutely LOVE THIS PROGRAM !!! :)
|
I have Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition and
FileDialogChanger is working fine.
If there is a compatibility problem on your QTEK S100 it
does not warrant comments about the software being crap.
And RD100 was trying to be helpful.
So the program does not work for you,
you have lost no money, just a little time.

I have Windows 2003SE w/ VGA display (Axim X50v). FileDialogChanger 1.5 is awesome! Remember in addition to filedlgchg.cpl you must also download gsGetfile.dll from the developer's website and upload both files to your PPC windows directory.
WORKS GREAT WITH WINDOWS 2003SE VGA!!!
|
I also have an Axim x50v. I followed all the instructions above - downloaded and installed gsfinder+, copied both filedlgchg.cpl and gsGetfile.dll to Windows directory on my PPC. I use gsfinder+ to locate the file, choose open, and am prompted to "extract," "open," "parameters..." or "choose program."
Nothing happens with extract.
Open - I get "exceptional applications" window
Parameters - I don't know what to put
Choose program - I don't know what program to choose
I can't see that it got installed. What am I not doing? (I downloaded the ARM version.)
|
Got it, just needed to check the box that said "replace standard dialog", or something to that effect. It works fine. By the way, the option to pick was just "open."
|
Works fine on my hx4700. Awesome tool
Also, to add to the install instructions: You do not need to install a file browser like GSFinder+, etc. You can Ause ActiveSync to connect the iPAQ to your PC. On the PC, run File Explorer. Browse to \Windows\filedlgchg.cpl. Right click and copy that file. Paste a shortcut anywhere on the iPAQ. You can then run that shortcut on the IPAQ using the iPAQ explorer. I put this shortcut in my "\Windows\Start Menu\Settings" folder so that I could change the settings from the Start-Settings menu.

Darn it, I need help. I copied the two files to \windows ( filedlgchg.cpl and gsgetfile.dll ),.. and it didn't work right at first, (my save as dialog came up with gibberish characters and wierd stuff),.. now after messing around a little I don't get ANY save as dialog (not even the MS one), things just save instantly to 'my documents' when I close pgms, regardless of whether I activate or deactivate the file dialog changer in settings.
I wonder if I've accidently deleted the wm2003 version of getfile.dll I see no such dll in \windows,.. does anyone know if it should be there?
|
** Total noob to PPC **
Is there a compatibility list for this program? I have an HP iPAQ 2750, and I seem to be having trouble getting this to work. Any advice would be appreciated - save for flaming and trolling, I don't have time for that.
Thanks, arvliet

Unless I have missed something, v1.60 is a WM5 build only and the current PPC2002/2003 etc. build is v1.50 released 9/11/2004. If I'm wrong let me know because I'll want to grab the latest version of this 'must-have' patch!
|
You didn't miss anything. The developer explicitly noted on their website:
"FileDialogChanger Ver.1.60 (for WM5 PPC) 2005/11/13"
If you don't read japanese, which most likely you don't. You should use babelfish.altavista.com to translate the page content to English like I did.
|
You should:
For those who are not able to use File Dialog Changer:
1. Copy filedlgchg.cpl & GsGetFile.dll into windows folder
2. Goto Settings, click icon "File Dialog Changer"
3. **CHECK checkbox "Exchange Standard File Dialog"**
That's all. At first, I did not know I have to check the checkbox and of course nothing happens. So, don't forget step 3.
|
Anyone able to get the Cancel button to show correctly on WM2005 as I am using 1.60 with the last version of gsgetfile.dll.
RGDS & TIA for the help.
|
I have an Axim x51v running WM5.
Which version of GsGetFile.dll should
I use? ARMRel, MIPSRel or SHxRel?
All 3 were unziped from the gsgetfile-i.zip.
Thank you.
|
mdurnin,
Your Axim is a ARM processor.

A very great app. , must have!
it works very well on my old cassiopeia em-500!
just one bad thing, it doesnt change the open dialogs, just the save dialogs, but it was never ment to be used for that i think, nice application, only the developer should also translate his homepage into english ;)
|
well after all it kinda sucks, sometimes i get some wierd characters instead of a dialog.
|
^ Same here. I get a useless dialog which doesn't even allow me to move up a directory?
|
I think I'm using v1.60 (can't be sure) on an iPAQ6515
This app works perfectly - just put both filedlgchg.cpl and gsgetfile.dll in the same directory (eg. \Windows)
Works with every app I have or even tested - even the ill-behaved ones. Puts Microsoft's dumb idea of \My Documents in the dustbin, where it belongs
|
To add to my post of April last on this utility, I've upgraded to WM5 (on an iPAQ HW6910)
Same old problem with Microsoft's O/S - everything has to be located in \My Documents.
So I used v1.65 of this utility ... copied both filedlgchg.cpl (v1.65) and gsgetfile.dll into \Windows, ticked the "Standard File Exchange" box in Settings, System, File Exchange icon, and everything just works, perfectly
|
Question:
I am using File Dialog Changer v1.65 with WM 2003SE and I try to install a Programm in the directory /Programs/Samplexxx on my storagecard. The installation creates a new folder in the directory I wanted, but the contents of this folder is placed in an folder at the original place within the programfolder in the default directory.
Who can help me?
|
2mimalue
you can help yourself =) read the comments on this page carefully: basically you need to place two files (filedlgchg.cpl & gsgetfile.dll) into the windows directory of your pocketpc, then go to control panel ("settings" from the main menu), open file dialog changer applet and check the "exchange standard file dialog" option. that's it, easy.
|
There is a newer version of "gsGetFile.dll" (25.11.06, ver. 10)
|
This is EXACTLY what I needed today. I just downloaded it and installed it on my Dell Axim x51v and it works great! No more saving and moving files- they can be saved exactly where you want.
|
someone was asking about how does it works... there are sources on the author's page... look for "gsgetfile-i-src.zip"
|
It also works with wm6 :)
|
Agree with ronsmitsnl on V1.66
The gsgetfile.dll utility works with WM6. Marvellous !!!
|
The only application it doesn't seem to work on (HTC Mogul, WinMobile 6) is Notepad from Tillansoft. The support notes for Notepad offer tGetFile.dll in order to be able to use the File dialog at all. If this dll is absent, you can't do File/Save at all. If it's present, it appears to override the File Dialog Changer application described on this page. A pity, as Notepad is quite useful.
|
I read RD100's explaination on how to install but did not get it. To begin with:
1. When I unzip them op my pc I see several .cpl's. all different it seems?! It shows MIPS, ARM and SH3 (whatever that all means) under "Pad".
2. On my mobile (HTC Touch) in Windows folder I find many folders. In which folder do I have to put the (hopefully better explained) .cpl's to make them work?
English is not my mothertongue so an explanation not too complicated without shortcuts would be appreciated.
Thanks.
|
Hi Edo
Your HTC Touch runs WM6 so it has an ARM processor. Simply copy the files from the ARM sub-folder to the \Windows folder on your device. You will then find a new icon in Settings with a checkbox which you use to enable File Dialog Chamger.
Good luck
Patrick

Hello,
Will this also be able to search or open deep subfolders. I can save now, but when I open word mobile I can't get to deeper subfolders. I can get to them in going through explorer. Also, I don't have a new icon in my settings screen. I clicked on the filedlgchg.cpl and it went to gsgetfile.dll clicked yes for both. The save as works but I am not sure about he get
|
This works on Windows Mobile 6, for those who are wondering. It also works with PocketNotepad from Tillanosoft (someone said it didn't. It works on mine, it should work on yours if you set it up right) Great little program. You kind of have to piece it together, but it's just two files. What others have already written can be useful to make it happen.
|
It doesn't work with WM6.5 :(
Hopefully development of this "must have" software is not completely dead.
|
OMG, it's been 5 years since I posted my "review" as MikeInDallas. As V@no stated, the tool does not work on WinMo 6.5. I've tried it on two different devices, an iPAQ that is in development, and hx2790 with xda ROM. It fails to do anything on both devices. Hopefully the author will fix because this is one of the most important tools I have for WinMo devices, and has been for now 5 to 6 years. Wow!
|
I'm crazy about this utility! For those of you who have copied the two files to your Windows folder, but still haven't found the File Dialog Changer icon in your system settings, you should do a soft reset after installing the files. Once you've done that, you will not need to hunt around in the Windows folder at all to start the utility. It will appear in your system settings from then on.
