MortPlayer - v3.31 b77 Categorie: Music
Screen Shot
The style is of the OGG Vorbis compatible readers format. Who's to complain? MortPlayer is an additional musical file reader in our database, and is compatible with the MP3 and OGG formats.
At the beginning, the author needed big buttons to easily manipulate with his fingers while in his car or on the subway. At the time, he was not concerned with the graphics. Also, he sought to optimize its use: the program is small and uses the least amount of RAM possible.
As for the options and the possibilities to create lists, there is not much more to add again, it is still very good work. Let's hope that the author will work on what is missing (he is aware and the to-do list along with a few minor bugs are mentionned on his site) so that we have an excellent application.

Update: A lot of good things added to this excellent software: file association support, lists included on many file folders, support for skins, a screensaver, etc.

This is a truly outstanding piece of software. It's very German -- many, many different options available in the Settings section, sometimes with Help, though the English that is used is sometimes a little Teutonic in flavor .... Do visit the Web site; there are skins there that are much better-looking than the default skin shown here, including some full-screen ones.

The main question is, of course, how does it sound? I installed MortPlayer and GSPlayer at the same time, and it seemed to me that there was an "edge" GSPlayer's sound, while MortPlayer sounded smoother (Sennheiser HD44 headphones). But you must make your own decision.

Wishlist: Graphic EQ for .ogg (only works with MP3 at the moment). Still, it's quite brilliant -- many thanks to the author!

Great program. I love the Maxx skins from the website, and I love being able to wake up to MP3s. I just wish the alarm would launch the program automatically, and you could set different alarms for different days.

Although I am VERY scrupulous reviewer (too much sometimes..), I must say that this player sounds really good! BETTER than GSPlayer - definitely.

Banjo009 (02-13-2005) - v3.1
Amen! Sound is good, but I mainly prefer it over GSPlayer for three reasons:

1.) Starts up much faster: 2 seconds vs. 14 seconds for GSPlayer!
2.) Better skins; BIG buttons
3.) Better Playlist management (it acually plays the song when you tap on it.)

I love this program, maybe even more than Mortbuttons. :)
Good work!

I haven't tried many of the music players yet, but this one is really nice. And free! I like it better than Pocketmusic, plus is seems to have more skins also. The only drawback is that it only support like 2 music formats. But that isn't a huge deal.

kyohwe91 (02-19-2005) - v3.1
I've tried mort player but the sound stops for not even a second in the middle of the song often and it's quite annoying. But the sound is excellent.

Mort (03-08-2005) - v3.2
First of all, MortPlayer uses the playback routines of GSPlayer (currently those of 2.15), so there shouldn't be much difference in sound quality... ;)
The gaps are an annoying problem, but I don't know any solution. Most of the times they're caused by an overloaded system (free memory, cpu usage, storage card access). GSPlayer has an advantage there, because less features (and graphics) of course need less memory...
If you encounter problems with cover images (esp. with iTunes), you might try to check the current beta in the message bord on www.sto-helit.de.

The best freeware music player, and I agree with all thee above. One feature I especially like is that it can modify the system volume to any level you want, and then change it back to the original volume before the program started. It is these little features that make MortPlayer the best out there, and these features that reserve it a special place in my heart. A must-download for music lovers!

9/10

i haven't been able to successfully skin my mort player; exactly how can I accomplish this. I made a myskin direct which I extracted the zip files too (coolblue); but I run the play nothing shows up in the skin selection; help thanks.

welovejesus (12-09-2005) - v3.2
MortPlayer, the best freeware player, works well with Windows Mobile 5 (latest beta release v3.3).

Mort (12-15-2005) - v3.2
V3.3 is released...

rpaines (12-23-2005) - v3.3
I have just got an IPAQ 1950 and have tried the Windows Media Player and GSPlayer but this program is A-one - I really like the large button concept.

ammar (01-12-2006) - v3.3
While this is a very good player, I prefer GSPlayer over it because it loads instantly. MortPlayer needs 3-4 seconds to start up.

mate.sk (01-12-2006) - v3.3
Very good player but i prefer todayplayer on today screen

Peter Rus (02-20-2006) - v3.3
i want a MIPS version :(

emuelle1 (04-10-2006) - v3.3
With most of my programs, I'm constantly looking for a way to do things better. Most applications don't work exactly the way you need them to, and sometimes it takes two or three of them (especially the PIM type programs) just to come close.

Mortplayer is the only program that I have NEVER bothered to search for a replacement for. I really only need it to do one thing, and Mortplayer does that so well that I rarely think to check for updates, although it gets better every release.

I mostly listen to podcast type mp3 files during my commute. I plug one of those cassette adapters into my Pocket PC and play my files while I'm driving. They're mostly vocal, and often an hour or more, so on a 25 minute drive it is important to be able to pick up where I left off when I get back in the car. Mortplayer does that very well. I honestly can't complain. I've been using it for about 3 years, since version 2.something.

ianl (04-12-2006) - v3.3
Using MortPlayer on iPAQ6515. Works fine with one big BUT (probably me not fully understanding the help file or somesuch):

How do you generate a Playlist from specific MP3 files - I cannot find a way to actually define a Playlist, just heaps of stuff about managing favourites ?

psyjohn (02-15-2007) - v3.31RC6
After trying several mp3 players I settled on MortPlayer and have been happily using it for months. The author updates it frequently and listens to feedback from users. MP does everything better than competitors except when it comes to making playlists. But, I just use media player to make them and MP reads them with no problem. BTW, I discovered that WinMediaPlayer can be condensed with PocketRar (available on this site) and will still open. Can't explain that but it is nice to have it taking up less space since microsoft won't allow us to remove it.

devinb (11-08-2007) - v3.31RC6
I've been using MortPlayer for about a year or so, IT IS GREAT! It works very well with my Cinglular8125 using Windows Mobile. The only thing I need on it is the ability to rewind/fast forward ONLY 10 seconds. Many times, I listen to sermons and need to go back to hear what I missed. The resolution on the position slider isn't fine enough for this. On SageTV the DVR pgm, it has two buttons that I can program to be whatever amount of time I want, such as 10 seconds on one and 2 minutes on the other. Please add this to the wish list for the next version. Thanks for the good work!!! Also, I haven't looked at the skins for the newest version, but a skin that would 'dock' at the bottom/middle of my screen would be good. This would allow me to still see most of my desktop. The old version has one that docks at the top, but you can't move it.

devinb (01-29-2008) - v3.31RC6
Also, the ability to speed up or slow down the given file that is playing would be really great! This would help when you want to listen faster or transcribe the given file.

knightk (02-16-2008) - v3.31RC8.1
Is it possible to shut the screen off while listening?

karthikshanth (07-11-2009) - v3.31 b77
This is one of best musicplayers in PPC.. Kudos to the team. [:)]

tommyrich (11-29-2009) - v3.31 b77
I tried this program using my HTC Fuze and it did not work. It installed correctly and even opened upon selecting the file but when I tried to load songs into a playlist, it first froze then played the song which sounded like a cd being played that was VERY scratched. I tried uninstalling the program from the REMOVE programs under settings, and it will not remove. The little spinning thinking wheel just keeps spinning and spinning. I even let it stay for almost 30 minutes and it still would not remove. I don't know what to do to remove it from my Fuze other than doing a hard reset which sucks having to do.
Anybody else had any problems with it using the HTC Fuze?
