XnView is a name that very probably means something to you if you manage images on your PC. It is one of the best viewers and if it is well known, it is because there is a freeware version.
Well, XnView Pocket is simply its Pocket PC cousin, a very complete program that is not missing much from its commercial competitors. The (French!) authors insist that it is a Beta version, but, after having gone through all the menus and tested images of a very respectable size, I could not even find the smallest problem.
I will not describe all the features, but it includes amongst others: a slideshow mode with the ability to create an executable, many different display size options, conversion between formats (JPG, GIF, PNG, etc), resizing, setting changes (contrast, luminosity, clarity) to name but a few. The authors await your suggestions to add to the program.
There is only a few icons directly accessible from the menu bar but this allows more room for the images. All the better since the menus are very complete and logically organised.
In short, excellent work in French (woohoo!) available for all platforms, even the oldest, MIPS & SH3, alas quite rare nowadays. To accompany a digital camera that comes with your Pocket PC, try this before buying something else: it is more developed than iPAQ Viewer, the standard on HP machines, and it may be enough for your purposes.
Update: the improvements keep coming. Here are the latest as of 13/10/2004 - v1.2:
- Album creation with multiple parameters (image size, rotation, correction, delay, sound, transition effects, quality...)
- Album and EXE file creation wizard
- Italian support
- WMA file support

great program,works fine with pictures from my camera(3.2 megapixel) I use it to check important pictures straight away on the ipaq's bigger screen. I've paid for a program that isn't this good, as freeware it's a must have bargain

Agreed with SpaceCadet, I've paid for an image viewer that isn't this good. I only wish it would support Minolta's MRW (raw) format...sigh. Very feature rich, and speaking as a software developer myself, annoyingly good :-) You will have to give your email address to them and with that they will send you a download link and a key. I have a hunch this one is going to go commercial...

I just downloaded this great program. It comes now with English, French, Italian and German languageversion (great, as I am German:-)) in version 1.20

How can this program get an 8? The webpage is in french, how do you expect people in other countries to download it? I tried the translation service, however they make you enter your email to download, and even then it doesn't work.

Don't you see the US/english flag with an orange link to English Website ?
What do you need more? An animated gif ;-) ?

Great Application! Fast and simple interface .. resize my jpeg images taken on my phone with ease.

Impressive freeware, pretty fast and a clean interface. Nothing astounding, but nothing wrong. Good stuff...

This program is very good. I give it 9/10. Jumping to next or previous images is very easy and loads quickly. This is best freeware viewer. (have tested some viewers here, and this is best in use and navigation.) Kudos Xnview.
Incompatible landscape view in WM5, manual landscape doesn't work. I'm waiting for WM5 compatible/improved version.
Almost good enough for reading mangascans (easy move image&jump).
Strange enough i don't see program registry field even i receive product code from Xnview.

Have done some serios testing of different photo viewing, and edditing programs for PPC's, both freeware, and payware ones, and apart from the expensive one from Resco, this is by far, the best of all.
It suports most formats, can make slideshows, and you can even do some "Photoshopping" with it.
It is eaven available for different languages, which makes it better than most payware programs.
As a picture viewer I would give it a 9/10 (needs a few formats to get the last point), and as a edditor it also gets 9/10, it's not perfect, but the closest to Photoshop you get on a PPC :o)

Wow!! had to add a comment as I have just set this up on my PDA with Windows Mobile 2003 -Superb programme that has clearly had a lot of thought put into it. - miles better than Windows Mobile Picture viewer and images load twice a fast! Get it - definately the best freeware viewer 9.5/10.

Great one, the only picture viewer that i've used that is not rubbish slow to open pictures right from camera card (i use a 3Mb file average and a slow card). Much usable.
