PocketDivXEncoder is a Windows program to re-encode video files in the DivX format in order to optimize them for the PocketPC (good landscape mode brightness). You can create .AVI files
- either with .VOB pulled from your DVDs
- or with .AVI or .MPG files optimized for much larger screens than those on PocketPCs.
You can then exploit it all in BetaPlayer or Pocket MVP.
Knowing that the video and audio files encodings can vary (DivX, XViD, AC3,MP3,OGG, etc.)and that your desktop can have installed codecs, there are still a few bugs and the progress margin is of notable size. The author is working hard to correct them as quickly as possible. I have personally only tested the VOB re-encoding but it did produce reasonable results.
PocketDivXEncoder lets you encode a video with optimized parameters for your PocketPC (landscape, 240x320, weak processor use, improved brightness,...).
You can choose the final encoding: OGM coupled with DivX5/OGG or .AVI with DivX5/MP3. You will only have to copy the final file to your PocketPC in order to read it with BetaPlayer or PocketMVP.
Encoding veterans (with help from VirtualDub, for example) will only see an immediate interest, but they may even be surprised by the selected speed (MEncoder is well known in the Linux world): the program is very fast! Those who have never tried to understand all the application's regulations are targeted by this utility - that even suggests a few cursors but already contains most of the optimized regulations for PocketPC. It also suggests a preview of the result,so that nothing is launched blindly.
There is no installation procedure, the downloadable file is an executable which leaves no trace on your desktop.
In short, now is the time to consider encoding your movie or music DVDs so that you can take them with you and play them anywhere.
Remember, this program is still under construction, so by trying it and sending your opinion to the author, you are contributing to the development of a program that will remain as a freeware.

This program is excelent for re-encoding media files
A normal DVD is just over 150 MB's after re-encoding, mostly because the program scales the movie back to 320x240; re-encoding a movie for a VGA device won't have the impressive results

Pretty good program! It is easy to use and it works! Works seamlessly with Betaplayer! (TCPMP) Good thing is that you can directly encode files from DVD Movies or other media files. I haven't tried a lot of other encoders out there but the bottom line is.. this is free..and is more than I've expected from a freeware.

This is a great program! it encodes very fast (even in 2-pass mode) and it gives you all options you need for encoding

Works great! I play the files on my iPAQ hx 2490 with TCPMP and didn't have a single corrupted file yet.

I was flat out amazed by this app - best re-encoding program I've used. It handles a wide variety of input formats and is very easy to use. The interface is very well done, professional, nicely laid out. I love the capability to batch encode a whole list of files - I happened to need to do a whole season of a TV show I was catching up one.

It is a great freeware software. Very intuitive and easy to use. The fast encoding is quite surprising. And the results are so very satisfying. I strongly recommend this program.
